Hauling 30 pounds of gear on a 33-pound mountain bike.


“Hey, people in Vietnam do it all the time,” I concluded as I explained my unconventional plan to a friend a few weeks ago for getting around the Bay Area.

Here is evidence that the bicycle simply works! Look how much the Ultimate Commuter Bike 1.0 could carry today! Not shown is the laptop bag that was on my back as I pedaled down to the Altamont Commuter Express train station in Stockton from my parents’ home.

This 65-lb setup bears some resemblance to a few of these vehicles in Vietnam, yes? Hurrah for the two-wheelers! :)
