Ultramarathons & Relays

Think marathons are hard? An ultra-marathon is any distance longer than 26.2 miles. I concede they are not the healthiest things to do, but a challenge builds character, and ultras are definitely a challenge.

“This is the loneliest race I have ever done,” lamented a female runner as she passed me like I was standing still at Mile 38. “I was really looking forward to that last water stop because I thought, ‘Good, there will be someone there,’ but there was no one…”

Indeed, she was only the second runner I had seen in the last eight miles. The other was another woman who passed me like I was standing still.

The Rocky Mountain Double Marathon — a 52.4 mile run — wasn’t like this for entire duration of the race. At the 6:00 am start of the race there were at least 80 other people doing the “mere” 26.2-mile option, and at least 17 other runners attempting the double. “Dear lord,” wrote my buddy Dan after I forwarded him the news. “I thought letting 14 year olds run a marathon was bad enough to lock up a parent. But a 4-year-old!!!”

Actually, Budhia Singh — the 4-year-old from India dubbed “Marathon Boy” and “India’s Forrest Gump” — did not run a marathon yesterday. He ran farther… much farther. In fact, perhaps enough to set a world record for a kid: 40 miles! Continue reading »

These are the most challenging events I’ve ever done, listed in order of difficulty. Most are in California, since that’s where I lived until I moved to Colorado in October 2005.
