Jeff Galloway Presentation

Nov 16th, 2007 (Fri) - Celebrities, Running

Jeff Galloway, the former 10,000-meter Olympian (1972) and best-selling author, came to visit Runners Roost in Fort Collins today, and it turned out his talk was very relevant to my latest posts about endurance sports, injuries and health.

“I am now on my 50th year of running,” said the 62-year-old marathon guru, “and have not been injured for the last 29. Before then, I was getting injured on average once every three weeks.” Continue reading »

Jack Lalanne: a Healthy Role Model

Nov 16th, 2007 (Fri) - Celebrities, Health & Fitness

Ok, I removed the post about “unhealthy role models” since I decided I want my website to continue to be about celebrating athletic achievements instead of denigrating them. :) In that vein, I thought I’d post something about a “healthy role model” instead. One that comes to mind is Jack LaLanne, still alive at 93 years young. Continue reading »

Tribute to Steve Fossett

“Jack of all trades, master of none” is a phrase people derogatorily use to describe someone who is good at many things but great at nothing. (Never mind that the full saying actually is “Jack of all trades, master of none, though ofttimes better than master of one.”) Or, if not used in a disparaging way, elders like to repeat the cliché to pose a choice to youngsters: which would you rather be?

And that is what I love most about Steve Fossett: he proved the choice doesn’t have to be either/or. One can pursue a whole range of activities and excel at all of them. Continue reading »

An Evening with Lynn Hill

Jul 23rd, 2007 (Mon) - Celebrities, Indoor Climbing

“I can’t believe that we get to visit Lynn Hill!” I exclaimed to Ann and Stacey who were visiting for the weekend.

Lynn Hill — for those who don’t know — is the Lance Armstrong of rock climbing and perhaps the most famous and photographed female rock climber in the whole world. In 1979, she was the first woman to establish a 5.12+/5.13 (Ophir Broke in Ophir, Colorado). She is probably most known for making the first free ascent of the Nose Route on Yosemite’s El Capitan in 1993 — a feat not duplicated for 10 years. Very soon she’ll even be gracing the cover of the 30th Anniversary edition of Outside Magazine.

It turns out she is also a friend of Stacey. Continue reading »

Deena Kastor 8k Levee Run

May 6th, 2007 (Sun) - 1 mi - 10k races, Celebrities

“Guess who will be in Stockton area when I am down there for my dad’s birthday?” I wrote a friend and fellow marathoner. “Deena Kastor!”

It turned out that Deena — America’s top long-distance runner — was going to be in the region as part of fundraising efforts for Tiger Bar Sports‘ planned Olympic facility in Isleton, California. Isleton is a tiny Delta aquaduct town with a mix of historic and dilapidated buildings, some appearing to date back to the 19th century Gold Rush. It is sleepy beyond belief, although the new Olympic series may give it a shot of adrenaline. At least this weekend’s eight kilometer (five mile) run was sure bound to. Continue reading »
