Bicycling in Fort Collins — a town long recognized as one of the League of American Bicyclists’ top cycling-friendly communities in the U.S. — is generally safe, with plenty of recreational trails and bike lanes and even good drivers. Yet, there are some areas that could use improvement. Recently, Fort Collins Now (a local publication) had me write an article about this.

A tactical race. That is what I fully set out to do after burning out quicker than a roadside flare in the Sharin’ o’ the Green 5k last month, a consequence of starting out like a jackrabbit. After all, the Horsetooth Half was 10 miles longer, not to mention a few lumps in the earth’s crust in Fort Collins with names such as “Monster Mountain,” “Dam Hill,” and “Bingham Hill.” Continue reading »
A couple of weeks ago, NextNC (a weekly Northern Colorado publication) asked me to write an article about Fort Collins’ newest bicycle/pedestrian trail, the Mason Trail. Hence, in the spirit of investigative reporting, I took Carrie out for a 30-mile ride to check it out. Never mind that entailed riding through some snowflakes and a 40-mph headwind on a 25-degree day, one of only three non-spring-like days we had this March in Fort Collins!

Our city just had its local election. There were a couple ballot questions containing legal mumbo-jumbo pertaining to leasing rights and annexation, plus some races for a few city council seats. And then there was the contest for mayor of Fort Collins. Continue reading »
