Best Places to Live

In 2005, I traveled through North America evaluating towns to determine the best place to move to and live in. One pleasant finding was that no single area had a complete monopoly of The Good Life. There are many places in the U.S. and the world that I would have loved to live in, and this category contains many of them.

Boulder, CO

“I keep trying to move out of Boulder,” said my friend Micah, citing the high cost of living here plus congestion problems. “But I just have not found a place that can offer all that Boulder can.”

Indeed, Boulder offers world-class cycling, skiing, and rock climbing, along with one of the nation’s hippest pedestrian malls and perhaps the fittest population in the country. It also has been named the healthiest town in the country, the best city for runners, the town with the highest percentage of people having a bachelor’s degree (an astounding 67%), and the most dog-friendly town, as well as the Denver metro area being voted one of the best towns for singles. At least from a city standpoint (neglecting scenery), this is my favorite town in all of Colorado. More impressions coming soon. In the meantime, you can check out these photos.

Fort Collins, CO

Upon arriving in Fort Collins, I met up with a former co-worker (Ken K.) who had moved here 5 years ago. He graciously agreed to come out to lunch and share his insights about Fort Collins. He likes the place a lot, and I will share some of his and my impressions soon. In the meantime, you can check out these photos. Also below are some excerpts from an email I sent out: Continue reading »

Bend, OR

Bend is the largest town in Central Oregon and is celebrating it’s centennial year this year (2005). It first caught my interest because 1) being just east of the Cascades in high desert country, it does not rain nearly as much as any city in western Oregon from Portland to Medford, and 2) a number of high-profile athletes seem to have defected there from California. It was my first major stop in my 2-month “Great American Western Tour“, and it certainly did not disappoint.

In addition to going around the city and making my own conclusions, I got some GREAT insights and information from two friends of AJ, Margey and Hunza. Margey, it turns out, used to babysit AJ when he was just a little kid in Massachusettes! She lived in Bend for 7 years and Hunza exactly 8 when I met him (on his birthday), and truly seem to love the place. I cannot blame them. Below are impressions I got from them, from what I witnessed, along with research of the ‘net. Continue reading »

State College is a university town in the mountains approximately 125 miles east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Impressions are coming sometime this year, once I sit down and write a report. : ) In the meantime, you can view some photos.

Athens, GA

Athens is a youthful town of 100,000 60 miles east of Atlanta. The University of Georgia, one of the nation’s leading research institutions and one of the oldest state colleges in the nation, plays a prominent role in the economics and culture of the town as it makes up about 1/3rd of the jobs and most of the people traversing downtown are college students.
