I had spent years pondering my ideal place to live, and in late 2005, I decided that Fort Collins was it. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one — ten months later, Money Magazine declared Fort Collins as “the best place to live” in America. I won’t disagree.

Even as the mercury in thermometers dip below the freezing line during the nights at this time of year, Old Town Fort Collins is still a pleasure to visit after dinner time. One reason for that is every year around the first week of November, a whole crew of people with cranes and ladders hang strands of tiny white lights on trees and posts lining the streets of downtown. Then, for three months, the center of Fort Collins looks like it is being blanketed by millions of fireflies, and suddenly one feels an urge to run down to Ace Hardware to buy his own strands of lights for his home to join the festive spirit. It’s kind of funny to think that just two days ago I was mountain biking for three hours in a T-shirt and shorts in temperatures that were in the mid-70s. Bicycling in Fort Collins — a town long recognized as one of the League of American Bicyclists’ top cycling-friendly communities in the U.S. — is generally safe, with plenty of recreational trails and bike lanes and even good drivers. Yet, there are some areas that could use improvement. Recently, Fort Collins Now (a local publication) had me write an article about this.
