There are many things that people spend a lot of time on during the day, be it one’s job, paying the bills, or watching TV. One thing that should take priority above all, however, is one’s health. If one isn’t healthy, it’s hard to enjoy all the other good things in life. Regardless of how much money one may have, without his health, he is poor.

Putting Health Back into Endurance Sports

Last week I wrote about how extreme amounts of exercise — amounts frequently undertaken by endurance athletes in so-called “ultra” sports events and training — are actually detrimental to one’s health and can accelerate aging.

So for someone like myself who really enjoys doing long-distance athletic events, this is a worry. Fortunately, I’ve never had anything but the most trivial of injuries (e.g., sprained ankle trying to kick out of cycling pedals with dirt in my cleats), rarely get sick, and look younger than I am (or so everyone keeps telling me). Ultra-Endurance Sports Are Unhealthy

People are often surprised when they hear me say that ultra-endurance activities — including marathons, ultra runs, double centuries, and Ironman triathlons — are Not Very Healthy for you.

After all, haven’t I been participating in these types events (including some ridiculously tough ones) for the last, oh, 10-12 years?
