Colorado

Colorado is my current home, so it should be no surprise that this colorful place is one of my favorite states in the union. There are only a handful of other states that combine such mountainous, scenic beauty with a temperate climate and endless recreational opportunities.

Colorado Blizzard

It’s kind of funny to think that just 1.5 days ago I was doing 14 miles worth of errands in Fort Collins on my bicycle and was on the verge of overheating in my three layers. In contrast, today the city was virtually shut down! This was the most severe snowstorm Fort Collins has had since March 2003, and is now dubbed the “Colorado Blizzard of 2006.” Continue reading »

Snow!

Well, we almost made it through November without receiving any snow! But just like last year, that streak ended just days after Thanksgiving. Here’s a photo of the back yard taken a day after receiving the first flakes. There is now plenty of powder to make a snowman. Continue reading »

Colorado Fall Colors

It’s that time of year again when the air becomes a tad crisper and leafy aspens explode with brilliant shades of yellow, red, and gold in Northern Colorado. Unfortunately, I will be in California when the Colorado fall colors hit their peak, but I got a good preview during a delightful 200-mile self-supported bicycle ride on Monday. The United States of Obesity

More good news for Colorado! Using data maintained by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an organization called CalorieLab has concluded that — once again — the Rocky Mountain State has (by far) the lowest percentage of obese people in the nation with just 16.9% of its citizens being classified as ticking time-bombs of lard. Hooray! Continue reading »

Rocky Mtn. Nat’l Park, CO

“We have to see some mountains!” warned Kat when she told me that she and Guy were coming to visit.

Fortunately, some of the highest and most spectacular mountains are right here in Colorado just 45 miles southwest of Fort Collins, plus it was nice that I still had my National Parks Pass (which saved us $20 on entering the park) from last year’s Great American Road Trip. The mountains still had a healthy covering of snow in certain areas, and happily, US-34 through the western part of the park opened up just as we encountered a roadblock. The park is home to several peaks above 12-, 13-, and 14,000 feet. Kat and Guy want to come back to try to climb one or two of them, which is perfectly fine with me. :) More photos are here.
