It’s time! I’m leaving to catch a Greyhound bus for Banff in 30 minutes, so this will likely be the last post until July 10th or so — when I hope to finish the 2,711-mile mountain bike race from Banff, Canada to Mexico border at Antelope Wells, NM.

The race actually starts at noon on Friday, June 13th. I will be wearing a tracking device courtesy of SPOT, so you can track my progress (in real time, I think) here:

http://tourdivide.org/leaderboard

Furthermore, I will be calling race headquarters every couple days or so to check in and leave a message on my status. The actual voice recordings and transcriptions will be here:

http://tourdivide.org/blog
http://mtbcast.com

When I return, I will post photos and a write-up on the race.

Until then, bonne courage!

Phew! Most of them were even achieved “on time,” or close. I doubt I could have done so had I been working 45-60 hours/week, which is the beauty of being semi-retired — being able to devote more time to other things of interest and importance to oneself apart from making a living. (more…)

Twenty-four hours after finishing the Sulphur Springs 100, I am happy to report I successfully completed all 100 miles on foot, even if barely. Due to the numerous hills, nearly freezing to death at one point, having problems seeing where I was going at night even with a headlamp, foot blisters, utter fatigue, and getting lost with just 5.5 miles to go (and hence actually “running” 102.5 miles, total), I finished with just 20 minutes to spare in second-to-the-last place of all finishers… but of course I was just happy to finish. This was definitely the hardest one-day event I’ve ever done; a true suffer-fest. (more…)

One of the more interesting things about coming out to southeastern Canada this month was getting to see significant locations of my father’s youth. My dad, you see, immigrated to Canada when he was 13 and grew up in Montréal. So when I was there, I visited the schools he attended along with the location where my Great Grandfather had a laundry shop. Photos of all this are below.

Then, in the Toronto, Ontario, I had dinner with relatives on my mom’s side of the family that I haven’t seen in almost 23 years (when I was 9 or 10.) Above is a photo from that get together. It was great to see them all after all this time. (more…)

As of this moment, I am in the Toronto, Ontario area in Canada at a cousin’s place and plopped in front of a 60″ TV.

The last three CNN headlines:

John McCain was in Stockton, CA (where I grew up) rejecting some conservative pastor’s comments.

A huge tornado touched down in Windsor, CO prompting a state of emergency. Man, that is only 15-20 miles southeast of where I live in Fort Collins! Hope the damage in Windsor wasn’t too bad and that not many people were hurt (I heard at least one person died. :( )

Wildfires in the Santa Cruz mountains, where I used to spend a lot of time many years ago. Hope my friends living up there are okay.

I sort of expected to be a lot like Montreal but in fact it was very different! It had more classic, historical buildings and architecture (in fact, 2008 was the 400 year anniversary of the city), and was much cleaner. Even people’s accents were slightly different. Here are some photos.

According to the late linguist Michel Thomas, 60% of all English words are derived from French. Now, that should make learning French rather “easy,” but a week after commencing intensive French classes here in Montréal, I still find myself mangling and mispronouncing words worse than a first-grader overdosed on candy.

Part of my problem is that French vowels and letter combinations are often pronounced much differently than a recalcitrant Anglophone would expect them to be, and that some words have completely different meanings than you’d suspect. Here are some examples ma professeur gave today. (more…)

I first heard about the tam-tams from my friend Kathleen, who used to live in Montréal. I wasn’t exactly sure where one could find them in Parc Mont-Royal, but it wasn’t hard — one could hear them a kilometer away with dozens of people (both residents and visitors) banging on leather and wood drums and even the bottoms of overturned five-gallon plastic paint cans. Meanwhile, others played hackey sack or flapped their arms wildly in the air while hopping around on the ground like a spring in an improvised dance. I merely watched, thank you. (more…)

“Don’t forget to try poutine!” wrote a friend who used to live here.

“Last night I ate pizza and poutine,” said an American from San Francisco in my French language school.

“As-tu essayé poutine?” a French-speaking Dutchman asked me later that day.

So the second night here I went out for a 10:00pm snack of this mysterious poutine. I didn’t even have to resort to Mickey Dees. Instead, I went to an A&W-like joint called Le Belle Province and had a regular-sized cup of poutine. Just one of them, thank you. The above photo has two because one of the Indian subletters I went out with also had a serving of poutine, so no, I did not gorge and pretend I was in some food eating contest by having what might have constituted a McDonald’s super-sized poutine. (more…)

Well, it seemed like a brilliant idea at the time: renting a bicycle after class with some friends from the Point-3 Language School in Montréal and work out the quadriceps. But if I had any illusions that this would constitute some much-needed “training,” they vanished within 10 minutes when a couple of our girls were already a whole province off the back of the group despite the rest of us rolling at a speed of maybe two kilometers per hour (ok I’m exaggerating) on the bike trail adjacent to Le Canal de Lachine. Something about “not having ridden a bicycle in 15 years.”

No worries; we waited and still had fun. It turned out to be a good scouting mission for the question of “where in the city does one go running or biking for fun anyway?” In fact, four days later, I’d run on the same trail (which was adorned with banners proclaiming its 30th anniversary) to the port of Lachine and back for a distance of, oh, 30 kilometers. (more…)

I had just six days in New England, but I tried making the most of it — including visiting three states I’ve never been to before. Yet, I went at a fairly leisurely pace so as to enjoy the moment, even if this meant not making it to some parts (such as Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park in Maine) that I was thinking of visiting. Total cost of the trip, including airfare from/to Colorado, rental car, gas, shuttles, parking, lodging, meals, groceries, museum tickets, and the $110 Boston Marathon: $850.05. The experience: like what those Mastercard commercials say. (more…)

It was time to say goodbye to the wonderful ocean blue Mustang convertible that, yes, I could not help but keep praising the last few days. (Thank you, Budget Rental Cars, for lending me this vehicle for just $15/day!) This morning was my final drive with this vehicle — a car that reminds me partly of my former Atlantic metallic blue Z3 and also of the new KITT — going from Portland, Maine to Manchester, New Hampshire. I dropped off the ‘vert at the Manchester Airport and then took a free shuttle down to Boston.

Which is where I am now and will be for the next two days. I am already (after being here for only six or so hours) feeling somewhat overwhelmed by all the cars (worse traffic than San Francisco!), crowds, noise, and outrageous prices (e.g., $40 parking and $4.59/gallon for diesel near Fenway Park. Fortunately, I did not drive!). But it hasn’t been a bad day — even if I do already miss Maine, New Hampshire, and of course, the ‘Stang. (more…)

Yesterday was an excellent day. Clear skies, warm temperatures (70-80 degrees Fahrenheit), and amazing scenery along the Maine Coast.

I stopped by the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum which was really interesting, and stopped in Camden during the evening. I also did a 3.5-mile hike up and down Mt. Battie in Camden, which was very steep and probably not the greatest idea for getting ready for the Boston Marathon on Monday, but absolutely worth it from a surreal spiritual sense with the views from up above.

It’s also funny to say this, but I am in love with my rental car! Yes, a Ford… the sky blue Mustang Convertible I wrote about yesterday. What a fabulous machine! America can build great cars!

Off on my last drive in the ‘Stang back to Manchester, New Hampshire. Then, I should be in Boston not too long after hopping on a free shuttle from the Manchester Airport. Signing off from the beautiful city of Portland, Maine.

I remember I accidentally parked illegally, and instead of giving me a ticket, they left me a note that said something like ‘we know you are from out of town so we won’t give you a ticket. Thank you for visiting Maine.’ It was quite nice of them.”

I had to agree with Lisa — Portland is a very cute town with a beautiful downtown, harbor, shops, and restaurants. The funny thing is I had a near-similar experience to Lisa for parking. You see, I had overstayed my meter time by two or three minutes, and right when I got to my car, a meter patrol guy was in the middle of tearing a ticket from his ticket pad and slapping it on the windshield. The split second after he did this I said, “sorry,” and he turned to me somewhat embarrassed and ended up apologizing in return. (more…)

“Hey, what’s this?” I mused after reading a paragraph. “A ‘transportation museum’ just southeast of Camden.” Reading on, I noted something about planes, some vintage Harleys, and even a prototype 1963 Mustang. I think the latter just about did it for me since I was driving (and enthralled with) a 2008 Mustang on this trip. (more…)

“Since ‘The Kank’ has no gas stations, stores, or hamburger clowns on its 34-mile stretch to Conway,” wrote Gary McKechnie in his book, Great American Motorcycle Tours, “the town of Lincoln has thoughtfully added a flood of ugly stores and smelly things. Race past these and into some of the most mind-boggling alpine scenery and rideable roads you’ll encounter. Goose it to 60 and get into the rhythm of the road, but be prepared to brake when you reach some 20 mph hairpin turns that deliver you to scenic viewing areas such as the Hancock Overlook.”

These words came to mind as I followed a Suzuki GSX-R rider, not nearly able to match his speed or corner-carving prowess and bemoaning the fact that my rental car had an automatic slushbox instead of a proper stick. But that was the only complaint I had, and it was a minor one. After all, here I was in the White Mountains in a Ford Mustang convertible — much better than, say, a Ford Focus I thought I was going to get from the rental car agency — and the weather was gorgeous enough to have to top down all day. And the alpine scenery was, well, mind-boggling all right. (more…)

One could probably say that my northeastern U.S. trip started sub-optimally. After sleeping only one hour, I was blasted out of bed by my 100-decibel alarm clock at 3:30am and due to my grogginess, driving down towards the Denver International Airport was quite a chore. (Should’ve taken the Shamrock shuttle instead.) Then, on my Southwest flight to Manchester, NH, I was completely enveloped by the Texan Congregation of Fatsos which made sitting (much less sleeping) quite uncomfortable.

The woes of the morning were suddenly erased when I arrived at the Manchester airport, with just one sentence from the girl at the rental car agency (Budget) that I had a reservation with. (more…)

Take Boquete, Panama, for example. This is one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to, surrounded by verdant mountains and ubiquitous colorful flowers. It was a shame to me, then, that in certain places there were so much trash (plastic bags, food containers, aluminum cans, etc.) littering the sides of the roads or banks of the rivers. Being a near-obsessive/compulsive neat freak, I felt the urge to come out with some garbage bags and pick up some trash — a feeling only pacified by the reminder that I was not going to be in Boquete that long and that our schedule was already jam-packed as it was. (more…)

So for as long as I can remember (2-4 weeks), I’ve been receiving phone calls daily from 888-327-8454. Sometimes they wake me up and get me out of bed. When I answer the phone, no one answers. The times I don’t pick up a phone, an automated voicemail is left. All those voicemails are from the same robot saying, “You need to update your Earthlink account. Please call 888-327-8454.”

There’s one problem with this. I don’t have an Earthlink account. I never did and I certainly never will in the future. And if I have my way, this post will encourage no one else to either! :) (more…)

The 2008 Denver International was a different experience for me than any other car show I’ve gone to prior, but not because there were, say, some wild new cars that I’ve never seen before. Instead, it was because this time I had the opportunity and time to sit in maybe 30 vehicles to tap my fingers on the center consoles, feel the materials of the armrests, and judge the stylistic merits of dashboards.

Why the sudden interest in interiors, you may ask? Blame it on a couple of cars I rented in recent months. (more…)

“How are you doing without the old MG?” is a question I’ve been receiving a lot lately. And the answer may be a surprise:

Very well, thank you. Can’t say I am really missing her. Actually, it’s been a big relief not having to deal with ignition points, valve clearances, dual carburetors, carburetor dampers, distributors, fuel pumps, hydraulic fluid, bewildering electrical maladies, knockoff hammers, tubes in the tires, etc. Maybe I’m still in denial mode.

And of course, there’s Goldie’s replacement: the Buell. (more…)

When I run on the recreation trails around my neighborhood, every few minutes I’d see (and hear!), say, a pup bouncing up and down behind a glass sliding door or a majestic terrier standing erect like a human with his front paws over the three-foot-high fences out here while barking to the clouds. Once in a while, one of these friendly yappers even join me on my run for a minute or so, trotting alongside while wildly wagging his tail — until he sees a more interesting subject, like a squirrel or something. (more…)

“I thought you said it’s always sunny in Fort Collins,” Tori teased as a layer of fluffy snow slowly built up in the back yard.

It’s curious how it seems like whenever friends from out of state come here, sub-optimal weather coincides with their visit. For example, in January 2007 John’s visit occurred on by far the three most bitterly cold days I’ve ever experienced (a high of 1-2 degrees Fahrenheit) — only for the temperatures to return to 30 degrees the day after he left. Then, during Tori’s first visit last year, we had a heat wave resulting in two of the hottest days of the year (99 degrees). (more…)
