Review

Rating:

Bruno Schull has writing talent, and it is clear he is passionate about bicycling. But “The Long Season” is too much of a “Long Read” for what it contains. 75% of the book seemingly retells what happened in European races (e.g., Paris-Roubaix and one of the early 90s Tour de Frances) that he watched at a Berkeley bar. His own personal races and cycling experiences are, surprisingly, recounted in a much-less long-winded fashion.

Too bad — if I wanted a book about the Tour de France, I would have read one about the Tour de France. Schull’s book promised to be about California racing and delve into his relationship and eventual breakup with his girlfriend (purportedly caused by his cycling obsession), but does so only superficially.
