Athens, Greece
Partway through a cycling vacation on the picturesque Eretria Island, my group of Colorado friends and I decided to take a well-deserved break from our bicycles and venture to the vibrant city of Athens for a day trip. The encounter, while brief, left an indelible mark on our memories due to its iconic landmarks.
Our first day in Athens was a whirlwind of historical immersion. We eagerly set off to marvel at the architectural wonders of the Parthenon and the Acropolis, standing as testaments to the city’s glorious past. I was also reminded of its more recent past, as I remembered that Yanni–who wrote many of the piano songs that I play–had a famous concert at the Acropolis in 1993.
As we walked through the Ancient Agora, we were transported back in time, imagining the bustling marketplace that once occupied the space. The grand Stoa left us in awe, its imposing columns a reminder of the city’s rich heritage. We also made sure to visit the Temple of Olympic Zeus, an impressive testament to ancient Greek craftsmanship.
While Athens is renowned for its historical significance, it also offers delightful escapes within the city limits. We strolled through the serene National Garden, appreciating the lush greenery and tranquil ambiance it provided amidst the urban hustle. We were not fortunate enough to see the changing of the guards at the Parliament–a ceremony steeped in tradition and precision. But we did see the guards march a few feet while stomping their feet.
A week later, my friend Mel and I found ourselves back in Athens before our onward journey to Madrid. Determined to make the most of our time, we embarked on a more personal adventure. Before the sun set over the city, we visited the Olympic Stadium, basking in the aura of athletic excellence that permeated the air.
The spirit of competition motivated me, and I woke up at the crack of dawn the next day to undertake a do-it-yourself half-marathon, marking my achievement of running in a third European Union country. The National Garden in Athens provided a peaceful backdrop as I pursued my running goals.
After the invigorating run, Mel and I explored the city further, seeking out attractions that showcased the contemporary side of Athens. The Panathenaic Stadium, a testament to the city’s Olympic legacy, fascinated us with its rich history and awe-inspiring architecture. We also indulged our passion for automobiles at the Hellenic Motor Museum, marveling at the collection of vintage cars that traced the evolution of automotive engineering. The museum was worthy of its own post.
As the day drew to a close, we soaked up the vibrant atmosphere of Kapnikareus Square, taking a leisurely stroll and absorbing the city’s vibrant energy. To celebrate our time in Athens, we found a charming spot for drinks, toasting to the incredible experiences we had shared throughout the trip.
Athens, with its historical landmarks, cultural richness, and a perfect blend of ancient and modern charm, captivated us beyond measure. Our day trip turned into an unforgettable exploration of Greece’s glorious past and present. From the grandeur of the Parthenon to the peaceful respite of the National Garden, and the exhilaration of athletic achievements, our time in Athens was a testament to the city’s timeless allure.
