An Afternoon Stroll on the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga in Galicia

In late January, with the skies clearing and beckoning us outdoors, Andrea and I seized the opportunity for a rejuvenating hike. Remembering fondly our previous excursion 2.5 years ago, we set our sights on the Ruta de Pedras e da Auga in Meis, Galicia. This time, however, we decided to make it a family affair and invited Andrea’s mother along for the journey.

The adventure began as we embarked on the trail, passing through an aldea, a quaint Galician village adorned with a tiny old church, an iconic hórreo, and statues depicting Gallegas and various animals. It was a charming introduction to the natural and cultural wonders that awaited us.

Following the meandering path alongside the river, we were greeted by the gentle sounds of flowing water and the rustling of leaves in the crisp winter air. While there was some elevation gain along the way, the trail remained manageable, offering a pleasant balance of challenge and serenity.

Over the course of our 10-kilometer hike, we marveled at the picturesque scenery unfolding before us. The halfway point of our journey coincided with the Monastery of Armenteira, a historic landmark where Andrea’s former coworker had exchanged vows just the year before. It was a poignant reminder of the timeless beauty and significance of the region.

Continuing our trek, we ventured a little further and found respite outside Café-Bar a Fonte, an authentic Galician restaurant bathed in sunlight. As we indulged in refreshing bottles of Estrella Galicia and savored the tranquil ambiance, we couldn’t resist the allure of the restaurant’s offerings. Inside, we were treated to a satisfying meal of hearty soup and delectable sandwiches, replenishing our energy for the return journey.

Heading back along the familiar path, we were surprised to encounter only a handful of fellow hikers, despite the radiant weather and breathtaking surroundings. It served as a poignant reminder of the hidden gems awaiting those willing to venture off the beaten path and explore the lesser-known corners of Galicia.

As we concluded our hike and bid farewell to the Ruta de Pedras e da Auga, we carried with us memories of a day filled with laughter, discovery, and the boundless beauty of nature. In the company of loved ones, amidst the tranquil landscapes of Meis, we found solace, adventure, and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the world around us.
