You can see how barren the foothills were past the Union Pacific railroad.  During the summer it gets hot (90s) during the day but rather cold at night due to the desert environment.

Idaho

Idaho may be really conservative and much of the state is depressingly barren. But northwest Idaho — particularly the Coeur d’Alene area — was one of the first areas that got me imagining about moving away from California. That area is gorgeous.
