It was a dream come true--10 years after my very first century, here I was watching the picturesque countryside of northern France roll on by in one of the world's most historic races. "Allez, et bon courage!" (Photo: maindruphoto.com.)
It’s been many years since my very first century of 1993, and yet my passion for cycling has only grown since. Be it racing against cars by Lodi Lake during my teenage years, struggling up Salsberry Pass in Death Valley with my faithful Cannondale or recumbent, or riding in darkness towards a distant inferno southeast of Yosemite on the 4th of July, the memories are large and plentiful.
Below are some cycling career highlights. Two thousand nine was something of a lax biking year for me as I focused on non-athletic pursuits. However, I intend to be biking more in 2010, including a return to organized long-distance rides.
- 2008 Tour Divide (6th place out of 16 starters; 27 days, 10 hours, 37 minutes; 11th person in the world to have successfully time-trialed the world’s longest mountain bike route)
- 2007 Brevet Series (200km, 300km, 400km, 600km)
- 2003 Paris-Brest-Paris ancien (84 hours, 29 minutes)
- 2003 Davis Brevet Series
- 1999 One Thousand Mile Club (5 double centuries in a year)
- 1999 California Triple Crown Stage Race (youngest rider to complete the series up to that point, age 23)
- Completed the California Triple Crown challenge in 2004, 2002, 2000, 1999, 1998, and 1997.
- Part of the winning team in the 1998 Bay Area Low Key Hill Climb Series
- Finisher of >30 double centuries and a few Ironman triathlons.

Felix, it’s always a pleasure to read your site. I wish you the very best in Colorado - we’ll miss you big time here in the Bay Area.
I’m going to ride PBP in ‘07. Can you recommend a place to stay, and can you comment on how best to pack/transport my carbon Orbea Orca to France?
Thank you for any input you can offer.
